How To Play Caribbean Stud Poker – Steps
The object of Caribbean Stud is to make a better five card poker hand than the dealer. It’s a very simple objective and as long as you know poker hand rankings you will know when you win or lose. Regardless of whether you play Caribbean Stud live or online the objective remains the same.
- Player makes an ante wager and an optional $1 progressive jackpot side bet.
- Player and dealer are each dealt five cards. These cards are all dealt face down except for one dealer card which remains visible to the player.
- Player must now decide whether to fold or raise. If the player folds he surrenders his cards, ante bet and side bet. If the player chooses to raise he must make a raise equal to twice his ante wager.
- Dealer now turns over his other four cards.
- The dealer must have at least an Ace-King high in order to qualify. If the dealer does not qualify the player wins even money on his ante bet and the raise will push. If the dealer does qualify and beats the players hand, the players ante and raise bets lose. If the dealer does qualify and loses to the players hand, the player earns even money on the ante bet and the raise bet is paid based on the Caribbean Stud payouts outlined below.

Caribbean Stud Optimal Strategy
The optimal strategy for Caribbean Stud poker is very complex and there are no set rules defined as to the right move in every single situation. Optimal strategy is thought to reduce the element of risk to 2.55%, which means you would lose an average of $2.55 for every $100 wagered playing Caribbean Stud with optimal strategy.
Caribbean Stud Basic Strategy
As mentioned above, optimal strategy is very difficult to master, but basic Caribbean Stud strategy can reduce the element of risk to only 2.67%, which is only $0.12 per $100 worse than optimal strategy. Basic strategy simply follows two basic rules:
- Always raise when you have a pair or better.
- Always fold with less than Ace-King high.
By following these two simple rules you drastically reduce the house edge from if you were making decisions by gut feeling.
